NYSAFAH Statement on Rent Guidelines Board Vote on Rent Freeze
NEW YORK, NY (June 30, 2026) – New York State Association for Affordable Housing (NYSAFAH) President and CEO Carlina Rivera released the following statement in response to in response to the New York City Fiscal Year 2027 Budget Agreement:
“Keeping people stably housed is an imperative as we work to address the city’s ongoing affordable housing crisis, and providing rental assistance through housing vouchers is a critical tool in achieving that goal. NYSAFAH commends the City Council for making expanding access to vouchers a nonnegotiable in this year’s budget talks.
“The agreement struck by the Council and the Mamdani administration not only provides relief for thousands of families but also sends an important message to property owners who participate in the voucher program that they can confidently continue to do so.
“We are also pleased that this budget provides additional resources to the City Department of Housing Preservation and Development, which we hope will help the agency work collaboratively with building owners to ensure new housing gets built more quickly, that our struggling affordable housing stock is preserved, and that violations are remedied efficiently and fairly to the benefit of housing operators and tenants alike.”
