Tompkins County, NY is centrally located in the beautiful Finger Lakes Region of Upstate New York which has a culturally, economically and civically engaged population of over 100,000 residents. Home to Cornell University and Ithaca College, Ithaca sits at the southern tip of Cayuga Lake, in an area surrounded by dramatic gorges and waterfalls. It has a small-town atmosphere while showcasing the qualities of a larger city through an incredibly diverse and active arts and culture scene. The city is surrounded by a rolling landscape of forests and farms with remarkable views, several vibrant, picturesque villages, and an abundance of outdoor recreational activities.

The Senior Planner will focus on housing issues in the community and will work directly with developers, municipal officials, and other community organizations to implement the County’s Housing Strategy to create safe, affordable and desirable housing in Tompkins County. It is an exciting time for affordable housing development, with the local Community Housing Development Fund that the Department administers seeing record levels of contributions as well as requests to support affordable housing development. The Department has also been able to assist with response to the COVID-19 pandemic by repurposing CDBG funds for emergency rental assistance while continuing rehabilitation assistance for lower income homeowners. The Senior Planner will have an opportunity to work with a remarkable team of motivated professional planners, elected and appointed officials, and a civically engaged population who appreciate the importance of planning. The successful candidate will have a passion for creating both rural and urban communities with opportunities for people to live meaningful and rewarding lives.
