Director of Policy

The New York State Association for Affordable Housing (NYSAFAH) is the trade association for New York's affordable housing industry statewide. Its 375 members include for-profit and nonprofit developers, lenders, investors, attorneys, architects, and others active in the financing, construction, and operation of affordable housing. The organization advocates for resources, policies and programs that spur the creation of modern, sustainable, affordable housing. Additionally, it offers networking and educational opportunities to strengthen the industry.

NYSAFAH seeks a Director of Policy to work collaboratively with staff, industry leaders, advocates, and legislators to determine affordable housing policy priorities and strategic initiatives. The Director of Policy identifies, evaluates, and advocates to advance policy initiatives that impact the affordable housing industry and supports the mission of House New York, the organization's 501c3 affiliate. This role works closely with the President / CEO and the Director of External Affairs to ensure the strategic focus of the organization continues to address the needs of the affordable housing community on an on-going basis. The Director of Policy, along with all staff, will provide support and liaise with members at conferences, events, and industry forums.

• Influence agency and governmental affordable housing policies at the local, state and national level by working collaboratively with the organization's board of directors, members, partners, and staff.
• Build and lead New York's policy committees by defining objectives, processes and policy initiatives.
• Conduct independent research and policy analysis necessary to support advocacy and policy positions.
• Effectively collaborate on all communications and public relations surrounding the organization's policy and advocacy priorities.
• Enable and facilitate NYSAFAH's positioning across its areas of focus and increase engagement with affordable housing stakeholders through strategic communications and media platforms.
• Serve as an ambassador of NYSAFAH's mission and policy and advocacy priorities.
• Develop and maintain relationships across constituents including nonprofit partners, board members, government leaders, staff, and legislative consultants.

• Bachelor's degree required with 3-5 years' experience in policy, real estate, finance, or urban planning.
• Strong written and verbal communication skills are essential for success in this position.
• Solid, proactive project management skills with experience managing and coordinating policy analysis and high-impact advocacy campaigns.
• Skilled relationship manager to secure partnerships with internal and external stakeholders in undertaking common goals to build coalitions to impact advocacy at the local, state, and national levels.
• Strategic, tactful, self-aware leader able to influence at the government and organizational levels.
• Entrepreneurial, flexible, creative, energetic, hard-working, and unafraid of challenges.
